This class has taught me so much about different writing strategies. It was the perfect course to take after English 1010. They work so perfectly together and I feel like I have progressed so much since I graduated high school. One of the main things I learned about writing through this course was to recognize your audience before you write. I have always been able to recognize an audience but it has always been very broad. This course taught me how to narrow in on a specific audience so I work directly with their interests and beliefs. It makes your writing a lot more successful if you can be more definite on who you are writing to. I also learned how to use ethos, pathos and logos in the most effective way. It helps you to connect deeper with the audience that you have chosen. Through writing, you have complete control of molding the thoughts of your readers and persuading them to think the way you do. The only trick is you have do it right.
We had a lot of assignments throughout the semester that helped me practice ethos, pathos, logos and focusing on a specific audience. A couple specific examples would be our report and proposed solution. For the report, we really had to draw our audience in with our information and research. We had to organize our research in a way that would keep our reader interested. If the audience doesn’t want to read it, there is no point in writing it. That was a good assignment to practice my improved writing skills. For our proposed solution, we got to practice using our ethos, pathos and logos. We needed to present our problem and get our audience to care about it so we could persuade them to make a change. We used pathos to make them care about what we were writing. We used logos to make logical stance on the issue and present a feasible way to fix it. Finally, we used ethos when we incorporated the research from our other sources. All of our sources were from credible people who specialized in the area that we pinpointed in our assignments. That helped us create a strong platform to present our proposed solution from. The assignment that I chose for my signature assignment was the Profile. It didn’t necessarily help me practice pathos or logos but there was a lot of ethos and focusing on a specific audience. In this assignment, I did a lot of research on a renowned nutritionist and had to make her sound credible. We used her in a lot of our research throughout the whole semester so it was interesting to do a little more investigating and see everything she has accomplished. This paper earned a perfect score from our professor. That is when I knew I fully understood everything I had been learning during the semester. Writing is used for everything. Every general education class requires that you write at least one essay throughout the semester. This class has taught me how to effectively write those essays. I feel more confident in my abilities to focus on a specific audience and help them understand whatever topic I am writing about. I feel like I learned how to organize my thoughts more effectively and how to express my thoughts in a way that is easy for my reader to understand. This is a skill I will use for the rest of my life. I have learned a lot of skills in this class and improved many more. I am excited to see how they affect me in my future career and what it can provide for me as I continue to further my education.
