I feel like nutrition can be integrated into just about every aspect of our lives. I feel like the things I have learned in other classes have supported the content that I have learned in this class. The first example that comes to mind is from my yoga class last semester. We spent a lot of time focusing on keeping our bodies safe and healthy. A lot of that comes from what we use to fuel our bodies and give ourselves energy. We can't expect our bodies to work properly if we don't fuel it properly. I also feel like this class can be integrated into all subjects because in order to have our brain and body function enough to do well, we need to give it the proper nutrients and energy. If we live off of sugary and processed foods, we won't have the proper nutrition to allow our body to work the way in needs to in order to help us succeed. So, the information provided in this class really can transfer to any class or aspect of our lives.
I have also done projects in my English 1010 and 2010 regarding nutrition and things in our food that are harmful vs helpful. I learned a lot in those projects about the effects that those things have on our bodies but in this class I was able to learn why it does what it does to our bodies. I have always had an interest in nutrition and have tried to incorporate that into different aspects of my life. Honestly, before this course, I kind of had the classic young adult mentality. I knew which foods were good for me and I knew what I should and shouldn't be eating but nothing was making me gain weight thanks to a fast metabolism. Therefore, I felt like I could eat whatever I wanted and I would just worry about nutrition later. However, throughout this course, I quickly realized that weight wasn't the only thing that was an indicator of our health. We did a personal dietary analysis and I was shocked to see how low I was on certain vitamins in my diet and how high my sodium was. I have since made some goals to limit the amount of times I eat out, increase my exercise time, stay hydrated, incorporate more fruits and vegetables into my meals and snacks. I can honestly say, in the short time that I have been implementing this in my diet, I have already started to feel better. It is amazing how good or bad our food choices can make us feel and act. Below, I have a research project posted regarding the documentary entitled Supersize Me. It follows a man who lives off of McDonald's for a month and the physical and mental toll that it takes on him. Please feel free to scroll through to essay to see what I learned about nutrition through this project. |
