This course was absolutely amazing and extremely humbling. The purpose of this class was to focus and educate ourselves on groups in our society that are oppressed. We talked about racism, sexism, adultism, agism, etc. I didn't realize how ignorant I was to problems in our society until I took this class. There are people within our society that are being cheated out of basic rights because of things they can't control about themselves. After taking this course, I have made a goal to be a little more aware of what goes on in our society. If I am ever presented with the opportunity to make a difference, I hope I will have the courage to do it.
As a part of this class, we were required to find a foundation or group that we could join for a small amount of time and help them serve our community. It was such a neat experience to be able to take time from my own life in order to make someone else's life a little better. I chose to help the Launfal Foundation. They specifically work with those who may be less fortunate in order to make their lives easier and a little less stressful. They are constantly working on a variety of projects but the one I decided to help with was specifically for the homeless. We made sleeping mats out of plastic grocery sacks in order to give them a comfy and dry place to sleep. Below, I have attached a summary of the project and some challenges and rewards that I experienced through working with this foundation. I also included a PowerPoint presentation with pictures showing my experience with this project. Please feel free to click through the PowerPoint on the right and scroll through the project reflection below. |
